Mentor Text Linky {Science} - The Moon Book

I am so excited to be hosting our Must Read Mentor Text Linky today focusing on Science!

Science has always been one of my FAVORITE subjects to teach. :)  There are so many FANTASTIC books out there about various science topics that it was hard for me to pick just one.

I've decided to share a mentor text with you that is full of awesome information and illustrations. This author makes understanding science very simple. So what is the book you ask...........???

The Moon Book by Gail Gibbons

First of all, I have to say that Ms. Gibbons is such a great writer. She takes scientific content and makes it kid-friendly (and teacher-friendly too!). I always know that using her books will be a very effective way for my students to learn (and more exciting than just reading from the textbook or listening to me chatter on!).

The Moon Book focuses on many aspects of the moon. It talks about the moon in relation to the Earth, the phases of the moon, legends about the moon, solar and lunar eclipses, tides, the surface of the moon, travel to the moon and more! I especially love the labeled diagrams and illustrations because it helps the students to "see" exactly what is being discussed. And the rich vocabulary promotes further discussion with students. Students connect words like "orbit" and "rotate" to what they already know about the solar system.

I created a unit to use with my students as we worked with this mentor text. It is set up as a student book with graphic organizers that they can fill in as we read and discuss the text. There are vocabulary charts, illustrations to label, a Venn diagram to compare and contrast, phases to label, a timeline, an assessment, and more. Please check out this product in our Teachers Pay Teachers store.

And, if you teach the phases of the moon, here is a FREEBIE for students to fill in as they observe the phases each night, over the course of a month.  :O)

We also love Mr. Lee's Phases of the Moon Rap- if that doesn't get stuck in your head, I don't know what will!!  :O)

Please consider linking up some of your favorite science mentor texts! I look forward to adding them to my library!!!  :)  Yay!!!

(If you have never linked up before you can check HERE for more information.)

I really can't wait to hear about all your science mentor texts! Thanks so much for visiting us!!!
-Stacia :)

P.S.- Please make yourself a SANDWICH!  What do I mean?  I mean please comment on the person who linked up before you and the person that linked up after you.  I know everyone puts in a lot of time and effort to these posts and I want everyone to feel the love!!!  (Haha, see, you're a sandwich...you know...because you are in the middle of the comments...do you get it?)  ;O)

Next week the subject is Social Studies.  It can be a book you use just for Social Studies or one you can use to integrate into Language Arts.  Science can be like that too!!  :O)

  1. Love Gail Gibbons, I chose one of her books to share too. Her stuff is so great. I love the activity you do with The Moon Book. In our school the 3rd graders learn about space, so I will be sending the link of your blog to the teacher! Thanks for hosting the linky party.

  11. I just found the Who Would Win non-fiction books... this is great for comparing animals. I did this with a 2nd grader I tutor and he write a great non-fiction paragraph comparing the two animals. Instead of doing a standard venn diagram, we broke it apart. We chose 4 ways they are alike (they both eat, they both live in the ocean, they both hunt, etc.) Then we looked at how they eat different things, how they live in different types of environments, how they hunt from different angles - it was great!

Thanks for sharing these great mentor texts! I'll have to check out some of the books I don't have.
