Word Work Ideas {Workshop Wednesday}
Hey there!
It has been waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long since I have linked up with my good friend Jessica over at Ideas by Jivey!
I just had to do a quick post because it's been so long, and trust me, this will be quick but I hope it will be helpful.
Today's topic is word work ideas. Our county does Greek and Latin roots. Well, I haven't even gotten into that yet. We have been working on synonyms, antonyms, and homophones, mostly, which doesn't sound like a whole lot, but with my schedule this year, we can't get to it every day. I'm having to alternate word study and grammar. Blarg.
So, one big thing that I am doing is task cards for "center" time. Rachel Lynette has some great task cards, and they are age appropriate for my 4th graders (because, come on, they do get tired of finding the antonym to hot). I should give you links here, but I'd forever be leaving links to all of her amazing task cards for synonyms, antonyms, and homophones. :O) So, here is Rachel Lynette's TpT Store link!
Stacia and I have also made a ton of sorting games within a bunch of our packs, so we use those to sort the three types of words.
Also, now that I have my iPad mini, my kids are obsessed with QR codes. Kristin Kennedy over at iTeach 1:1 has tons of great QR code games. I recently got this one for synonyms and antonyms.
But, there are oodles of FREE games on TpT if you search for synonyms, antonyms, and homophones. You'll find tons that are free, and I know we have some practice sheets in our TpT that are free for this if you need an assessment of how they are doing. :O)
Up next, I want to buy this pack from Joanne at Head Over Heels for Teaching.
Since we aren't really supposed to teach spelling, I figure a making words activity like this would be great practice for them.
At some point, I'd like to get my BOGGLE board up and going, but I am handling all of the juggling of "centers" right now that I can. I'm slowly adding things in as we go so no one gets overwhelmed (mostly me!!!).
I hope to get to know some APPs on the iPad that we can use for spelling (because I do have word lists I can use), but I haven't gotten that far yet. If you know of any, please let me know!!
Be sure to check out the other ideas linked up at Jivey's blog!!!

We love comments!! Like, super love them!! We like to reply by email (so you can see our response and we can chat back and forth) so please make sure that option is turned on in your profile settings or leave your email address here! Thanks again for taking time to comment!! It means a lot!!
I totally need to get Boggle going in my room too!! My kids loved it last year. I wonder if you could use Scramble With Friends on the iPad?? It's like Boggle- but I think it "needs" internet......

Awww, thanks for the shout out BBB! My students love Expand a Word, it's like a game to them (I love when we trick them!). I use my Boggle Board for early finishers. What about Text Twist for your iPad?

I really want to use task cards more. I just haven't quite jumped in yet.
