Hey there! It's Friday the 13th. I think I realized that at some point today but as quick as the notion hit me it left. I guess that's good that I don't have any crazy Friday the 13th stories today!! :O)
I am here to review my week! We had a great deal of fun this week...it might even look like I wasn't teaching...but I was!! Isn't that the best kind of teaching?
It's so fun to share all of the exciting things we did (whether a standard or not) from the week so I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for
We kicked off our estimation unit by reading the book Betcha!
This is a great book that shows how to come up with an accurate estimation. After I read the book, we went outside to do some estimation of our own.
We traveled around the school and estimated in different places. Here, we estimated how many seats were in the cafeteria.
For more information, check out the blogpost we did HERE about this Must Read Math Mentor Text!
We have been studying clouds all week! This is another great way to get outside and observe! After learning about the clouds and observing them, we made clouds with cotton balls and they described them on their papers. The next day, we made clouds out of shaving cream! I'll talk more about this in our blog post tomorrow!!
We have been studying Native Americans and we studied the Inuit. Today, we made igloos out of mini marshmallows and frosting. Students took a styrofoam cup and made an opening for a door. Then, they coated the cup with vanilla frosting and starting putting their marshmallows on top. They had tons of fun and made a complete mess. Is making an igloo a standard somewhere in our curriculum? No. Is it a standard I set to have fun in my classroom? Yes. I can say today that standard was met and mastered!! ;O)
(Yes, many of them did eat it afterward!! Hello sick bellies!!)
Last but definitely not least, our principal has heard our cry of wanting more technology!! She purchased each teacher in our school a Kindle Fire HD!!!! Whoop whoop!!! Now, I know nothing about a Kindle Fire, but I'm super excited to figure it out!! If you have any suggestions for us, please let us know!!! We are looking for some fun apps to show our students!!
So, there is some of our week!! I promise I did teach!
Have a great weekend!!
Amanda

Secondgradealicious!
Sounds like you had a great week. I love your math activities - my students love activities that take us out of the class. Last week we went on a word hunt - around the class, down the halls, around the outside of the school - the other classes were very interested in what we were doing! I love the igloo and the clouds - your room must have had a nice smell!
ReplyDeleteI forgot about doing shaving cream clouds! Fun! :)
