Math Flashcard Games for Workshop Wednesday

Happy Wednesday, Friends! Halfway done with testing! Yay! :)

Okay, we are linking up with our good friend Jessica at Ideas by Jivey for her Workshop Wednesday. I was so excited to see that this week's topic was math card games because I love using cards in math!!! And the kids love it too! So..........I decided to share 2 games that I have used for many years...........games that I played in school..........games that the kids LOVE! And the BEST PART is they are SIMPLE!!!!!!!!
We love SIMPLE! SIMPLE is GOOD!  :)

All you need for these games is a set of flashcards- could be addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, place value, fractions, decimals, whatever you are working on. I split the class into 2 teams or sometimes more depending on how many kids there are. The players on each team get in a line (sometimes I have them stand in a line and sometimes they sit). Then, I decide which team goes first. I have the first player in line scoot up to where I am and I hold up the flashcard. That player has to answer the card (for example, if it is a multiplication problem they would say the product). If they get it correct, they get to play the game (see below for the 2 games). If they miss it, they get to call on one person from their team to help them. Then they get to guess again with that person's help. If they still get it incorrect, they go to the back of the line and will get to try again when their turn comes up again.

So.....if they answer correctly, they get to play the game. I am gonna talk about the 2 games in just a second...After they play the game, play continues with the first person on the other team, and then it goes back and forth from team to team until you decide time is up or everyone has had a certain number of turns.

Now for the 2 GAMES- this is the FUN PART!!! :)

1. Classroom Basketball- there are a couple options here- sometimes I crumple up paper and that is the "ball" and the child has to stand a certain distance and shoot it into the recycle bin or trash bin. If they get it in, they get a point for their team (I have made this more basketball-like with some classes where I have put tape on the floor and marked off lines where they can stand to earn 1 point or 2 points or even a 3 pointer- always adds a little excitement!). You can decide if the student gets only 1 shot or 2 shots or whatever depending on your class and age of the students...In years past, I had one of those little plastic hoops that stick to the board, and the kids would get to throw the little squishy basketball into the hoop...that was fun too!!!

2. Wheel of Fortune or Guess the Puzzle- this is one of my personal favorites! I come up with a word or phrase or something and I draw the dashes on the board indicating where letters go. If a student gets his or her flashcard correct, the student guesses a letter. If the letter is up there, I fill it in. Then, that TEAM gets to guess the word or phrase. I call on ONE person from the team and if they get it right, their team earns a point. If they don't, play continues with the flashcards until one team correctly solves the puzzle. Usually we go through many puzzles in a game. I even integrate Science and Social Studies sometimes into the puzzles and the kids are always like, "Oh, we are learning about that!!!" So that makes it fun too! :)

{If you want to make it more Wheel of Fortune-like you can...no, I don't have a wheel I use (although I could bring in the little wheel that came with the board game I have)....you can let the team who solves the puzzle correctly roll a dice and instead of earning just one point, they earn however many points they roll.....just an extra surprise!}

I really love these games because I know that I can pull them out quickly and go! There is really no prep work. And they don't just have to be used in math.......I use these often when I am reviewing for a test in science or social studies. Instead of flashcards, I just ask the teams review questions. These games engage all the students and give everyone a chance to participate.   :)

I can't wait to hear your ideas...I am sure you have many more games like this!

{We also posted about other math card games HERE!}

  2. Love the basketball idea, I know I have a few boys that would actually try to play the flashcard game if they knew they could actually have permission to through paper into the garbage can :)

  5. Love your ideas. I think it is great that you also use them to review science and social studies too. We have a widget for our Brightlinks that allows us to play a variation of Wheel of Fortune only it's called Shark Bait and if you guess a letter wrong the little swimming fish makes a comment and takes a bite out of the plank your avatar is standing on - the kids go crazy for it! I try to write phrases that go with what we are learning too.

  6. These are fantastic ideas! My boys think they cannot throw anything out in the garbage with out shooting it like a basketball! I am new to the blogging world and would be honored if you would follow me. Thank you for all of your wonderful ideas!
